Congratulations to senior football player Cedric Mitchell who received an IHSAA Exemplary Sportsmanship Report today for an incident that took place in our game vs. NorthWood on September 2. The report was submitted by Norm Sellers, Athletic Director at NorthWood High School.
During the 3rd quarter of our varsity football game vs. Concord, Cedric Mitchell was involved in a play on offense that took him out of bounds near our player entry area of Andrews Field. Cedric’s momentum caused him to accidentally collide with our honorary team doctor, Dr. Robert Abel. The collision was very violent in nature and caused Dr. Abel to fall backwards and hit his head on the track. At the time of the collision Cedric realized that he had ran into an elderly gentleman on the sideline. After the collision Cedric stayed to try and make sure that Dr. Abel was alright. Even after his teammates were calling on him to return to the game he ignored them to stay and be sure that Dr. Abel was ok. Thankfully the officials obliged his delay and did not penalize him for not returning to the field.
I truly thought this was a heartfelt gesture on Cedric’s part to be sure Dr. Abel was ok and the fans and administration that was near the collision appreciated his concern as well.
