Concord High School is pleased to name Derrick DeShone to the position of head boys
basketball coach. Mr. DeShone is a 2005 graduate of Jimtown High School, holds a
Bachelors Degree from Indiana University South Bend, and a Masters Degree from
Indiana Wesleyan. He is currently athletic director at New Prairie Middle School and
head boys basketball coach at New Prairie High School.
While a student at Jimtown, Derrick was a four-year letter winner in each football and
boys basketball. He was a starter on Jimtown’s 2004 Boys Basketball State
Championship team. He went on to play basketball at both Ball State University and
Indiana University South Bend where he was named to the CCAC All-Conference Team
in 2009 and was honored as Defensive Player of the Year three times.
Derrick began his head coaching career at Jimtown in 2011. He also served as an
assistant coach at Northridge (2009-2011) and LaVille (2012-2015). In 2015 he became
head coach at New Prairie where he compiled a record of 30-39 in three years.
“Derrick immediately impressed the interview committee with his enthusiasm and
energy,” said Dave Preheim, Concord High School Athletic Director. “He also laid out a
strong plan for developing our feeder system. In three short years at New Prairie he
nearly tripled the number of kids involved in the feeder program. Additionally, he served
as an assistant football coach as well. This proves his commitment to promoting the
benefits of multi-sport participation. Finally, having attended Concord through grade six
and Jimtown after that, Derrick is well familiar with the history and traditions of
basketball in this area. We are confident he will hit the ground running.”
Mr. DeShone will also be teaching Wellness at Concord High School, beginning in the
fall of 2018. DeShone replaces Steve Austin, who resigned in March after ten seasons at
the helm with a record of 125-102 at Concord and 447-314 in 33 years overall.
