Roy Swoape to be Inducted Into Indiana Football Hall of Fame

On June 17, 2022, Region 2 will induct 10 members into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, including 1982 Concord graduate Roy Swoape. Roy becomes our first former player inducted into the Hall of Fame and joins former Concord Head Coach Tim Dawson who was inducted in 2016. The complete list this year’s Region 2 inductees are: Coaches: Ned Cook (Jimtown), Mike Hecklinski (Marian) and Marty Huber (Bremen). Players: Jeremy Lowry (Penn), David Miller (Goshen), Rick Mitchem (SB Adams), Tony Semak (Penn) and Roy Swoape (Concord). Contributor: Chuck Freeby (Sportscaster WHME) Pioneer: Johnny Lujack of Notre Dame. The induction will take place at St. Hedwig Memorial Hall (331 South Scott Street, South Bend) on June 17. A social time begins at 5:30 PM with dinner and program to follow at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased in the CHS Athletic Office through June 1 or by calling Don Monhaut at 574-261-7341. No tickets will be available at the door. Click here for the Indiana Football Hall of Fame website. Here is more information about Roy Swoape: Roy Swoape Jr. was born in Elkhart Indiana in 1963. He began playing football when he was 8 years old. He played rocket football, middle school and high school. Roy was an outstanding player at Concord High School all 4 years he attended earning 3 letters. Roy graduated from Concord in 1982. Roy was a gifted athlete in many sports, but his love was football. During his time there, he received many awards. He received the NLC first team award for offense, defense and punting. He made first team all-state UPI and second team AP list. He was awarded most receptions trophy, MVP Defensive player and Tri-Captain trophy. Roy was selected to play in the North South All-Star Game. Roy also stood out in other sports. He lettered 2 years in basketball and 4 years in track and field. In track Roy stood out in the low and high hurdles. He qualified to go to the state in the low hurdles. Roy set four high school records. He was voted team MVP in 1982. Roy was named Elkhart Kiwanis male athlete of the year. He was inducted into the Concord Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993 and Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Roy had many colleges recruiting him for football. Roy decided on Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo Michigan. Roy lettered all 4 years there even setting a record for most tackles for loss in a single game. That record still stands. After college, Roy was offered two tryouts. He chose the New York Giants. He played with them for 6 weeks, playing in 2 preseason games. Roy went on to play 1 ½ seasons in Canada with the Ottawa Rough Riders. Roy resides in Kalamazoo,o Michigan with his high school sweetheart Jill of 35 years. Together they welcomed three daughters Melissa, Emily and Carly. Roy recently retired from UPS after 32 years of service.
